Celebrate Thanksgiving with Your Pet

Corgis with a pumpkin

While we may not be able to enjoy a big Thanksgiving gathering with family and friends this year, we can still make the most out of the holiday and celebrate with our furry friends! From enjoying a delicious meal to spending lots of quality time together, there is still a lot we can be thankful for this Thanksgiving. However, it’s important to be prepared to keep your pet safe to avoid spending your holiday at the vet.

Festive Feasts

Say the word “Thanksgiving” and comfort food often comes to mind. When planning out your Thanksgiving meal this year, make sure you’re aware of any potential dangers to your four-legged family member.

  • Turkey: Be sure your pet is not eating any turkey skin, meat drippings or other fatty and rich foods as these can lead to health issues such as pancreatitis. It’s also important to make sure your pet doesn't have access to any turkey bones, as these can damage their intestinal tract if ingested.
  • Desserts: Your pet will also need to be kept away from any sweets or desserts that you’ll be enjoying as eating these can lead to health issues. Like turkey skin and meat drippings, the high fat content found in nuts in many Thanksgiving desserts can lead to pancreatitis if ingested by your pet. Chocolate, macadamia nuts, raisins, grapes and xylitol which is found in many candies should be avoided at all costs as they are toxic to pets.
  • Alcohol: As it is toxic to them, pets should never be given alcohol.

Although your beloved companion won’t be able to indulge in the same delicious meal as you, they can still enjoy a festive and drool-worthy Thanksgiving dinner! With a variety of healthy food and treats available made with nutritious ingredients such as pumpkin, your pet is sure to lick their bowl clean this Thanksgiving.

If you want to do something extra special to celebrate Thanksgiving with your furry friend this year, try making a Puppaccino with Weruva’s Pumpkin Patch Up and Big Country Raw's Goat Milk!

It can be quite easy for us to indulge in a delicious holiday meal and the same is true for our pets! If you think your pet may have eaten one too many treats this Thanksgiving, make sure to keep an eye on their weight. With weigh scales in-store at all Ren’s Pets locations, monitoring your pet’s weight is now more convenient than ever. Something that typically would have only taken place during a visit to the vet can now be done on your next trip to Ren’s with your pet!

Even if you aren’t having guests over, decorating for the holidays can be a nice distraction during these challenging times. Plants can make a great addition to your Thanksgiving décor, but it’s important to do your research beforehand to make sure that whatever you choose is not harmful to your pet. When ingested, there are many plants that are toxic to our furry friends so be sure that whichever plant you select is pet friendly.

Play Time
